Oreochromis shiranus is a species which is living in very shallow bays, mainly on places whith a lot of vegetation along the shore. You can find them in the entire lake. This is one of the few non-endemic species in the lake, you can find them also in surrounding rivers. These cichlids are, together with the other tilapia species, very important for the local consumption of fish around Lake Malawi. Until now it is unknown to me on which location these examples were caught. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 36 cm, females stay smaller. Oreochromis shiranus is a very peaceful cichlid, which you can best keep with multiple females and other big species in a large tank with a lot of swimming space. In the lake they are feeding themselves with phytoplankton. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
